The reef runs along 2,300 km of coast, so the question is which part. Here is where it lies, how far the outer reef is from each base and how long the boat ride takes.

Where the Great Barrier Reef sits on the map

Look at a map of Queensland and the reef is the long band of water off the east coast. The Marine Park runs from the northern tip of Queensland to just north of Bundaberg, stretches approximately 2,300 km along the coast and extends over 14 degrees of latitude.8,1,9 No single town is at its center, which is why this guide treats the reef as a set of bases, each with its own distance to the water.

The band is also wide. The Marine Park is between 60 and 250 kilometres wide, so the outer reef can lie a long way from the mainland, and the part you reach depends on where you start.10 Tourism Australia lists Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach (Proserpine) and Hamilton Island as gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, all reachable by domestic flights from many of Australia's capital cities.11

The map block above this guide shows the main places: the outer reef sites off Cairns, the Cairns waterfront where boats leave, the Port Douglas side and then the whole reef coast from Lizard Island down to Heron Island and Lady Elliot Island. Use it to see how the pieces fit before reading the distances below.

How far the Great Barrier Reef is from Cairns

How far is the Great Barrier Reef from Cairns? The answer depends on which reef you mean, since Cairns is on the coast and the reef starts offshore. Reef Magic says its Moore Reef pontoon is approximately 45 km offshore, far enough from coastal rivers, streams and sandy beaches for clear ocean water.2 Sunlover, which also runs a pontoon at Moore Reef, gives about 47 km offshore.3

Boat time is the more practical measure. Reef Magic says its fast motor catamaran delivers you to the outer reef in only 90 minutes.4 Sunlover gives the cruise to its pontoon as about 1 hour 45 minutes, depending on conditions.5 The two figures are for different boats and operators, so read them as a range for the Cairns outer reef and not as a contradiction.

Our own listing is a 9-hour day, and its itinerary lines give 2 hours by catamaran out and 2 hours back, with 2 hours of snorkeling or diving at the first stop and 1.5 hours at the second. That crossing is slower than the fastest pontoon boats and the crew picks the sites on the day between the Flynn and Milln reefs and the more northern Norman and Hastings reefs. The reef you reach depends on the conditions that morning.

The Moore Reef figure is an operator's offshore distance, the two Whitsundays figures come from Tourism Whitsundays and the road figure from Tourism Australia.2,12,13

Port Douglas and the Agincourt ribbon reefs

North of Cairns, Port Douglas is the base for the Agincourt ribbon reefs. Tourism Port Douglas describes a 24 metre catamaran that departs daily from Port Douglas to visit 3 different reef sites on the outer Great Barrier Reef at the Agincourt ribbon reefs.14 Ribbon reefs are the long outer reefs that form along the shelf edge in the north.17

Wavelength, a Port Douglas snorkel operator, says its boat leaves from the Crystalbrook Superyacht Marina and needs 90 minutes to reach the shelf edge.6 That is the same order of time as the Cairns pontoon boats, so plan on the same early start and a long day on the water either way. The ribbon reefs reward the effort for divers and snorkelers, but they are not a quick hop from the marina.

The listing we compare on this site from Port Douglas lasts 8 hours, starts from $223 and has 837 reviews rated 4.9. Another full-day Port Douglas cruise lasts 9 hours and starts from $237, with 583 reviews rated 4.7. Prices are from prices, and the sections on cost and on choosing a base go into how Cairns and Port Douglas differ.

The Whitsundays and the reef further south

The Whitsundays are much further away. Tourism Whitsundays says they lie approximately 1,120 km north of Brisbane and 630 km south of Cairns.12 Its Hardy Reef pontoon is located 39 nautical miles from shore, and Bait Reef is the closest of the outer reef locations.7,29 For the Whitsundays, the reef is the outer reef rather than the islands, which have fringing reefs of their own.30

Boat time is longer from Airlie Beach. Tourism Whitsundays says tours to the outer reef usually depart early in the morning and return late afternoon, with the boat trip lasting approximately 2-3 hours each way.15 The Airlie Beach reef cruise we compare lasts 10 hours and starts from $185, with 349 reviews rated 4.5.

The reef continues south as well. The Marine Park ends just north of Bundaberg, and the map block lists Heron Island and Lady Elliot Island on the southern reef.8 Those places are reached by their own flights or boats, and none of them is a Cairns day trip. This guide focuses on the northern and central reef, where regular day trips run.

How to get to the Great Barrier Reef

How to get to the Great Barrier Reef depends on where you are starting. From overseas, you can fly directly to Cairns from New Zealand and from many hubs in Asia.16 Within Australia, flights from Sydney to Cairns take about 3 hours.31 The road is long: Tourism Australia gives Sydney to Cairns as 2421 km by road, and a flight is the practical way to cover that distance.13

The Whitsundays have their own airports. Tourism Whitsundays says two airports serve the region, with flights from Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney.32 From Brisbane, the bus trip to Airlie Beach takes around 19-20 hours, and a flight is the practical way to the Whitsundays.33 There is no sensible way to treat the reef as a road trip unless you plan a week or more.

Once you are on the coast, the reef is reached by boat, and your choice of base sets the length of the day. A reef cruise from Cairns means an early check-in at the Reef Fleet Terminal, which our listing gives as 7 AM to 7:45 AM for an 8 AM departure. Allow time for that, for parking, and for the crossing, since the day is long.

Plan the distance

What to check before you pick a base

Check the numbers3

  • Compare the time at the reef, not only the length of the day
  • Check if a distance is in kilometres or nautical miles7
  • Allow for check-in times, such as 7 AM to 7:45 AM

Think about the trip3

  • Plan a flight rather than a road trip between far bases13
  • Remember that town weather is a poor guide to the reef28
  • Treat prices as from prices and confirm them on the booking page

Reading the distances sensibly

Three cautions help when you compare numbers from different pages. First, operators measure from their own pontoon or boat, so 45 km and 47 km at Moore Reef are the same neighborhood described two ways.2,3 Second, boat speed varies, and a crossing time is an estimate that changes with conditions. Third, a distance in kilometres from a coastal town and a distance in nautical miles from shore are not the same measure.

Weather is the other variable. Sunlover says a grey morning in Cairns regularly turns into a bright day on the reef, so the forecast for town is a poor guide to the water.28 The Hardy Reef figure of 39 nautical miles is a distance from shore, while the Cairns figures describe the pontoon's position from the city, so treat them as orders of magnitude and not as a precise ranking of bases.7,2

The practical test is time on the reef. A long crossing leaves fewer hours in the water, so check each listing for its time at the reef as well as its length. For our listing that is 2 hours at the first stop and 1.5 hours at the second inside a 9-hour day, from $193 with free cancellation up to 24 hours before.
