Day boat or liveaboard: the first decision

The best diving on the Great Barrier Reef depends on the format you pick, and the rest of the planning follows from that choice. A day boat leaves from Cairns in the morning and returns the same day, while a liveaboard sleeps on the water for several nights. The Reef Authority describes diving and fishing charters as the option for people who like to be in amongst the environment,4 and it separately lists long range roving tours, whose groups are small and whose trips can cover long distances.5

A Great Barrier Reef scuba diving tour by day boat suits first-timers and short stays. One all-inclusive day trip lists a single scuba dive, either certified or a 20-minute resort dive, plus unlimited snorkelling, with 1.5 hours by catamaran each way and breakfast, a BBQ lunch and a cheese-and-crackers stop included. A superyacht day lists 2 hours at Saxon Reef and 2 hours at Hastings Reef, with snorkelling and scuba diving offered at both. A coral cay cruise lists certified and introductory dives as optional extras at Upolu Reef.

A liveaboard suits certified divers who want volume. The 3-day, 2-night liveaboard trip lists up to 11 dives, 9 by day and 2 at night, across 19 dive sites at 4 outer reef locations, with a maximum of 32 passengers. Mike Ball runs standard expeditions of 3, 4, 5 and 7 nights from Cairns.6 With a single day to spare, a day boat is the realistic choice; with several days, a liveaboard changes which reefs you can reach.

The northern map: Ribbon Reefs, Cod Hole and the Coral Sea

Serious divers talk about the far north of the Cairns region. The Reef Authority's Cairns Planning Area covers the offshore waters of Cairns and Port Douglas plus the Ribbon Reefs and Lizard Island, and the Authority counts it among the most visited parts of the Reef.7 The reefs and islands there support wildlife that includes dwarf minke whales, seabirds and green turtles.8 In the sources used for this page, the Ribbon Reefs appear in the liveaboard itineraries, while the day boats name Saxon, Hastings and Upolu reefs.

Mike Ball's 5-night Great Barrier Reef and Ribbon Reefs expedition lists the Cod Hole, Pixie Pinnacle, Steve's Bommie and Lighthouse Bommie among its sites, with up to 18 dives.1,2 Within the Cairns Planning Area, the Cod Hole and Lizard Island are protected by unmarked no-anchoring areas.9 Public moorings, by contrast, are open to every Reef user and sit at popular spots.10

The Coral Sea is a different scale again. Mike Ball's 7-night Coral Sea Exploratory lists up to 26 dives at Holmes, Bougainville, Osprey and Ribbon Reefs.11 The same operator runs minke whale dive expeditions, with the season given as June to July,12 and the Reef Authority says dive vessels regularly meet minke whales around the Ribbon Reefs in May to July.3

Day-boat diving from Cairns

Cairns scuba diving on a day boat spans a wide range of formats, and they differ in how much diving they leave room for. A 35-metre superyacht day lists scuba diving at Saxon and Hastings reefs, with a minimum age of 12 for introductory diving, medical clearance for divers over 65 and no diving within 24 hours before a flight. Down Under Cruise and Dive runs the 35-metre Evolution, with up to 5 hours on the reef at 2 outer reef sites.14

The Silverswift catamaran day lists 3 reef sites from Flynn, Pellowe, Milln and Thetford reefs, with a guided snorkel tour included and scuba diving offered. A premium catamaran day like this site's lists snorkelling and scuba diving at both reef stops, and certified divers must show proof of certification. Check which of the dives on your booking are extras, since several listings treat the dive as an optional add-on to a snorkel price.

Learning to dive on the Reef is possible without sleeping aboard. Sunlover is an SSI Training Centre. Its course spreads 9 training dives over 3 days, with 5 confined-water dives in a sheltered area under the Moore Reef pontoon and 4 open-water dives out on the reef itself.13 Pro Dive Cairns pairs a five-day Learn to Dive Open Water course alongside its three-day liveaboard trip.15

Diving from Port Douglas and the Agincourt reefs

From Port Douglas, a 7.5-hour outer reef day lists snorkel and scuba options at 3 Agincourt reef locations chosen for the day's conditions, with 1.5 hours by catamaran each way and pickup available. Another Port Douglas catamaran day lists 3 reef sites at Agincourt with 5 hours of reef time and a guided snorkel tour, and offers dwarf minke whale swims in season with a licensed vessel.

Dive sites carry limits that the boats have to respect. Each Location in the Cairns Planning Area is set at low, moderate or intensive use, and every visitor is bound by group size limits there.20 At low-use Locations the maximum is 15 people per vessel or aircraft including crew, at moderate-use Locations it is 60, and intensive-use Locations have no limit.21 Exemptions let tourism operators carry up to 100 people to a mooring or Reef Anchorage at some sites.22

A Location usually begins 500 metres out from the reef's seaward edge.23 The same plan includes Preservation Zones, marked pink, that you cannot enter except in limited circumstances.24 Ask the operator which use level its sites carry and how many guests share a dive briefing, since small liveaboard groups and large day-boat decks sit at opposite ends of that scale.

Certification, medicals and age limits

Every listing in this group asks for medical honesty. This site's own listing needs a medical questionnaire for diving, a minimum age of 12 with parental consent, proof of certification from certified divers and a moderate level of fitness. A day trip that includes a dive lists a minimum age of 12 for introductory diving, medical clearance from a physician for divers over 65, and no diving within 24 hours before a flight.

The Great Barrier Reef liveaboard trip asks certified divers to show proof of PADI Open Water certification or equivalent. The 2-day sailing trip on a 16-metre yacht books snorkelling only in its listed price, lists the minimum age for scuba diving as 12, and takes diving packages payable on board. Read what your booking covers, because a snorkel price and a dive price are not always the same line.

Pro Dive Cairns is a PADI dive centre in the Cairns CBD with purpose-built heated dive pools,25 and its liveaboard carries a maximum of 32 passengers.26 Mike Ball's Spoilsport follows an open dive deck policy with no limits on bottom time for safe diving.27 Each operator sets its own dive procedures, so ask before you book rather than assuming one operator's rules apply to another.

Recent research suggests the Ribbon Reefs, north of Cairns, are an important area for these creatures, particularly around May-July when individuals are regularly encountered by dive vessels in the area.

Paperwork4

  • Complete the medical questionnaire honestly
  • Bring proof of certification if you are certified
  • Plan no diving within 24 hours before a flight
  • Check the age limit, which is 12 for introductory diving

On the reef4

  • Practise buoyancy over sand before nearing coral16
  • Keep your hands off the reef, even for photographs17
  • Stay more than one metre from giant clams18
  • Wear a lycra or wet suit against stings and sunburn19

Diving the reef without harming it

The Reef Authority notes that some divers and snorkellers get a little too close and may stress marine life or crush and break corals, and that most damage comes from people unable to keep reasonable control in the water.28 Practise buoyancy control over sand patches before you approach a reef,16 and move slowly and deliberately, avoiding rapid changes in direction.29

Keep your hands, knees and gear off the reef itself, which matters most when you are photographing underwater.17 Keep more than a metre from giant clams, and give turtles, whales, sea snakes and other free-swimming animals plenty of room.18 Without a permit you may not damage, collect or remove coral, dead coral included, or the protected shells.30

The World Heritage Area is home to around 30 species of whale and dolphin, and dwarf minke whales, humpbacks and bottlenose dolphins are among those sighted and reported most often.31,32 Wearing a wet suit or lycra suit also helps protect you from sunburn and stings from jellyfish.19 The Authority suggests considering a high standard operator, and those operators are independently certified by Ecotourism Australia and Earth Check.33,34
