Three towns, one reef. The distance, the reef sites and the price differ from base to base, so here is how Cairns, Port Douglas and the Whitsundays compare for a reef day.

  • Where visits goCairns and the Whitsundays account for more than 86 per cent of tourist visits.7

How to choose a base for the reef

Pick a base before you pick a boat, since the base sets the sea route, the reef you reach and the other things you can do. Tourism Australia lists Cairns, Townsville, Airlie Beach (Proserpine) and Hamilton Island as gateways to the Great Barrier Reef, and the Reef Authority's outlook report says the Cairns and Whitsunday planning areas account for more than 86 per cent of tourist visits.8,7

The three bases are not the same distance from each other. The Whitsundays lie approximately 630 km south of Cairns, and they are approximately 1,120 km north of Brisbane.6 That makes it a decision between bases, not a decision between boats. You would not combine Cairns and the Whitsundays on a short trip without a flight, so it pays to choose one reef coast and do it well.

This page compares the three on four things: the boat ride, the reef you reach, the prices on the listings we compare and what else each base offers. It does not pick a winner for everyone. Each of the three is a legitimate answer to the question of which base for the reef, and the right one depends on how many days you have and what else you want from the trip.

Cairns, the practical base

Cairns is the gateway for the northern outer reef, and it has direct flights from New Zealand and from many hubs in Asia.11 Pontoon boats cross to Moore Reef, approximately 45 to 47 km offshore, in about 90 minutes at the fast end and about 1 hour 45 minutes at the slower end.9,10,1,2 Sunlover says a grey morning in Cairns regularly turns into a bright day on the reef.12

Day trips from Cairns start from $125 for a half-day snorkeling tour, and run up to $203 for a Green Island and outer reef sailing day. Our own listing is the premium catamaran day, a 9-hour trip from the Reef Fleet Terminal to 2 outer reef locations chosen on the day, from $193, with 3,767 reviews rated 4.8.

The Cairns listings we compared range from half days to overnight trips. A 2-day dive and snorkel boat trip starts from $468, for example, and a scenic flight over the outer reef starts from $167. That spread lets you scale the trip to your budget and your tolerance for early starts and long days at sea, which is a real advantage when you cannot yet say how a day on the water will suit you.

From prices

Starting prices by base

  • Cairns half day$125
  • Airlie Beach reef cruise$185
  • Cairns catamaran day$193
  • Port Douglas cruise$223
  • Airlie reef and beach$234
  • Port Douglas full day$237

Each bar is the listing's own from price, so the fare you pay depends on date and group.

Port Douglas, for the ribbon reefs

Port Douglas is the base for the Agincourt ribbon reefs. A catamaran that departs daily from Port Douglas visits 3 different reef sites on the outer reef at Agincourt, according to Tourism Port Douglas, which describes the vessel as a 24 metre catamaran designed for personalised dive and snorkel adventures.3 Ribbon reefs are the long outer reefs that form along the shelf edge in the north.15

Wavelength, a Port Douglas snorkel operator, says its boat needs 90 minutes to reach the shelf edge.4 Port Douglas outer reef days on the listings start from $223 for an 8-hour cruise with 837 reviews rated 4.9, and from $237 for a 9-hour full-day cruise with 583 reviews rated 4.7. A Port Douglas tour is the choice if the ribbon reefs are what you want.

Port Douglas is a separate town from Cairns, and you have to add a transfer if you stay in Cairns. A one-way private transfer between Cairns and Port Douglas starts from $175. If your hotel is in Cairns, that extra cost and an early start are part of a Port Douglas day, while staying in Port Douglas puts you next to the departure point.

The Whitsundays, islands and Hardy Reef

The Whitsundays are a different kind of reef trip. Tourism Whitsundays says the Whitsundays sit in the heart of the Great Barrier Reef, where you can snorkel fringing reefs close to the islands, dive the outer reef at Hardy Reef or see it all from above on a scenic flight.14 The Hardy Reef pontoon sits 39 nautical miles from shore, and Bait Reef is the closest of the outer reef locations.5,17

The boat ride to the outer reef takes approximately 2-3 hours each way from Airlie Beach.13 A reef adventure cruise from Airlie Beach lasts 10 hours and starts from $185, with 349 reviews rated 4.5, and a Great Barrier Reef and Whitehaven Beach tour lasts 8 hours and starts from $234. The Whitsundays give you the islands as well as the reef.

Getting there is a separate step. Two airports serve the region, with flights from Adelaide, Brisbane, Cairns, Melbourne and Sydney, and a scenic flight from Airlie Beach over the Whitsundays and the reef starts from $210.18 Tourism Whitsundays says there is no bad month in the Whitsundays, and that the water stays warm and swimmable all year.19

Cairns or the Whitsundays for the Great Barrier Reef

If you have one reef day and a limited budget, Cairns gives the lowest from prices in this comparison, and its fast pontoon boats cross in about 90 minutes.1 If you want the ribbon reefs, go north to Port Douglas. If you want islands, white-sand beaches and a reef day in one trip, the Whitsundays are the better fit, and you pay for it with a longer crossing.13

Water clarity is the other consideration. Tourism Whitsundays describes fringing reefs close to the islands as having slightly murkier water, and outer reefs further offshore as having clearer water and larger coral gardens.20 That is true at every base: the outer reef is the clearer one, and the nearer reef is the easier one. The difference is how far you go to reach each type.

Season is a smaller factor than you might expect. Marine stingers are present in tropical Queensland waters all year, but the risk is higher from November to May, according to the Queensland Government, and that applies to the Cairns and Port Douglas side.16 The Whitsundays offer warm water all year, and the choice between bases is mostly about the trip you want and not the calendar.19

Which base fits the time you have

With a single day, Cairns is the simplest choice: it asks the least of you in transport. You fly in, stay near the Reef Fleet Terminal and take a day boat. Our premium catamaran day is built for that, with check-in from 7 AM to 7:45 AM for an 8 AM departure and a return to the terminal the same day. It is the base where nothing else needs to be arranged.

With a few days, add Port Douglas or the Whitsundays. A trip that includes both Cairns and Port Douglas needs only a short transfer, while Cairns plus the Whitsundays means a flight between bases, as the two lie approximately 630 km apart.6 For a trip of a week or more, the Whitsundays are worth building around, and a second reef day in Cairns then becomes optional.

Whichever you choose, book with free cancellation and check the weather forecast a day or two ahead. The Cairns listing allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before for a full refund.
